The Plug-In Prius Prototype
Toyota, the biggest automaker in the world, said this week it intends to fasten the development of the new Plug-In Prius. The car maker also announced, it will "quickly and flexibly" respond to rising fuel prices
The president of Toyota, Katsuaki Watanabe, told reporters on Thursday that Toyota will launch a plug-in Prius for fleet customers in late 2009, a year ahead of schedule.
The Plug-In Prius will use Toyota’s proven lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries. These batteries are capable of holding more energy than nickel-metal hybrid cells. On the other hand, the redesigned Prius Hybrid will use proven nickel-metal hydride (NiMh) battery packs. The Plug-In Prius may run on its electrical motor nearly 10 miles, while the Chevy Volt, which is intended for introduction, promises 40 miles
