Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid

The German automaker, Porsche, has revealed some technical specs on its new Cayenne S Hybrid. Porsche plans to introduce the Cayenne S Hybridby the end of 2010. The automaker had it firsts thought about builiding a hybrid supercar in 2005. Eventually, Porsche unveiled its first functioning version of the Cayenne Hybrid at the LA Auto Show in November 2007.

The 2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid will feature a direct-injected, boosted 3.0-liter V6 engine rated at 333 horsepower and 324 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This "superengine" will be coupled with a three-phase synchronous electric motor that makes 52 hp and 221 lb-ft. Accoriding to Porsche, the Cayenne S Hybrid will need only 6.8 seconds from zero-to-sixty, using both engines. The Cayenne S Hybrid is expected to return fuel economy of at least 26 miles per gallon, with dramatically lower CO2 emissions.

The parallel full hybrid system, developed with Volkswagen, will be used in the 2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid. The energy will be stored in a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack. This system is simpler and more cost efficient than Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, but the drawback is that the batteries can’t be recharged while the vehicle is running on both engines. Porsche says the Cayenne S Hybrid runs up to 1.2 miles in all-electric mode and can coast without the combustion engine at speeds up to 86 mph.

According to recent reports, the base price of the hybrid Cayenne S will be approximately $44,000, only a few hundred more than a 2007 V6 Cayenne.
