The first hybrid version of the Lexus GS 450 was revealed at the New York Auto Show in March 2005. This high performance middle class sedan is the first rear-wheel drive hybrid. According to Japanese automaker, "the Super Ultra Low Emissions-rated GS 450h provides an unparalleled combination of high performance, luxury-refinement and unexpected fuel efficiency."
The Lexus GS 450 Hybrid is one of the most intriguing alternatives for eco-conscious buyers. Shoppers should be aware that this mild-hybrid car give you Prius-like fuel economy numbers. However, it will be less expensive at the pump than any BMW, Mercedes or Infinity.

In many respects, the GS 450h is a showcase of all the technology that Toyota Motor Company has in its arsenal. The 2009 GS 450h combines a 297-horsepower, 24-valve, 3.5-liter V6 engine with an electric motor-generator rated at 197 horsepower for a total power output of 340 horsepower, all driving the rear wheel — more than base versions of the BMW 5-Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The enrgy is stored in a 288-volt DC Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) battery pack. Electric motor torque will help the car achieve 0-60 mpg in 5.2 seconds, which is pretty impressive. The Lexus’ GS 450 Hybrid EPA highway rating is 24 mpg, while its city rating is 25 mpg — perhaps less than many buyers would expect from a hybrid, but more than expected from a large luxury car, which typically get between 15 and 20 mpg.

Lexus builds some of the most luxurious interiors in the automotive industry. The 2009 GS 450h puts all of the marque’s coachbuilding skill on display. The cabin is definitely classic Lexus, with lots of leather and real wood — nothing fake here — and plenty of amenities….There are probably more luxury features on the GS 450h than on a comparably equipped BMW 5 Series.
The GS 450 Hybrid features well-designed cabin electronics that aren’t overly complicated to operate, and an attractive cabin with sumptuous materials and industry-leading build-quality. Its standard audio system is appropriate to the price range of the car, but an available Mark Levinson premium audio system is extraordinary. Where the car falls short is in cargo space.
Pros:
Excellent blend of performance and handling, coupled with good fuel economy; Outstanding optional audio system; stylish interior and exterior; excellent safety features.
Cons:
Headroom and legroom restrictive for taller occupants; electrically-assisted steering feels awkward .
